WHAT PEOPLE SAY

“Microsoft UK is committed to making a difference in the community and we offer all our employees 3 days a year volunteering leave. We have recently added the Growing Ambitions portal to our intranet using their simple white label option so that our employees can sign up to the database directly. As a company we believe in inspiring the next generation of IT professionals and hope to make a real difference in encouraging more young people to enter the sector through the Growing Ambitions speaking sessions.” Karina Gibson, former Consultant Citizenship Manager, Microsoft UK.

"At Findcourses.co.uk we recently added the Growing Ambitions portal to our site. We want to raise awareness of this worthwhile initiative, while also giving our site audience of professionals and HR departments the opportunity to volunteer their half hour towards the youth of today – inspiring and motivating them towards more informed career choices." Thor Birtley, Managing Director, Findcourses.co.uk

“We would like to see more NHS Trusts around the UK encouraging their midwives to volunteer to speak to young people about their careers with Growing Ambitions. The sector desperately needs more recruits and our graduates working around the country are a potential source of great inspiration to the next generation of great midwives.” Professor Cathy Warwick, CBE, General Secretary, Royal College of Midwives

You never stop needing to learn and develop, and the ability to present is a skill that that needs lots of practice so opportunities to speak to a variety of audiences, like students, who can sometimes been your harshest critics, should be snapped up. [When asked by the students why I was volunteering] I pointed out that in the future, I may have to speak to even more important people in a convincing and authoritative manner and therefore I could do with all the practice I could get…practicing the ability to literally think on your feet and give meaningful and thoughtful answers to tricky questions when you have no idea what you are going to be asked is not something you get much opportunity to practice in your day to day work life.  [ ] if you are thinking about doing something like this, then I can truly recommend it." Volunteer Career Speaker - Victoria Hills, WTS London Member, Transport Projects & Performance Manager, Greater London Authority and Chair of the Transport Planning Society.  Victoria spoke at North Bridge House Senior School, Camden, London.

"Through my role in 'Secret Millionaire' I've seen first-hand just how rewarding investing in young people can be. I got into the programme thinking that I would be making a difference through making a financial donation but in the end I found that the volunteering my time and seeing the effect first hand was just as rewarding and meant just as much as giving money. With Growing Ambitions there's something all of us can do now. We can all spare half an hour to talk about our jobs - it can make a huge difference and show young people a different and better way. I'd encourage anyone in a decent job, whatever it is, to get signed up as a volunteer. Let's give our young people dreams and we'll see them help change their communities around." James Belamor, Managing Director, The Richmond Group; participant in 'Secret Millionaire', Channel 4

"Today’s young are not the product of a ‘dumbed-down’ education. On the contrary they are often vital, energetic, creative and confident; but little has prepared them for the commercial world that most of them will enter. Many of their early years in this environment will be spent trying to understand how it works and how they can make their way in it: they may even end up ‘on the scrap-heap’ before they are ‘off the ground’. It is imperative in today’s globally-competitive world that those with the knowledge and the willingness and the enthusiasm do all in their power to impart this expertise and provide this much-needed dimension to the young. This will enable them to take charge of their own future and their own development and not hand it over to those who see them merely as an economic unit in the furtherance of a quite different goal." Ray Piggott LLB CEng FIET former Chairman and CEO Cray Communications

“How many times when you were at school did you hear that working in sport wasn’t a ‘proper job’ and that you should look for something more realistic? I was hearing exactly those words from teachers, parents and even careers advisers at the very time I was trying to make up my mind.  As we know the whole world has changed since then and working in sport now is a real job with well proven career paths.  [Having the Growing Ambitions white label portal on our website] is a wonderful opportunity for anyone working at a sports club, leisure centre or recreation facility to volunteer with Growing Ambitions because it’s a chance to make a real difference to young lives.”  Ralph Riley, Chief Executive Officer, Institute of Sport and Recreation Management

"We have a desperate need, in England in particular, to provide far better services of information and guidance on learning and employment opportunities to all individuals of whatever age or stage - but most particularly to young people, for whom there is greater choice than they have ever had. People cannot make accurate and sensible choices withouth having accurate and sensible information. Growing Ambitions is an imaginative way, using the advantages that modern technology brings, of addressing this urgent issue." Brian Stevens, Director of FEdS Consultancy and  founder of the Goodison Group

"This worthwhile initiative is timely. This project will enable young people to connect with trainers, supporters, mentors and leaders in pursuit of their personal development. It will go some way to encouraging greatness." Ray Lewis, CEO, Eastside Young Leaders Academy, Plaistow, East London

“The presentation by the Cosmologists who came into the school through Growing Ambitions not only met essential parts of the curriculum, but generated an enthusiasm for the real world of physics in both students and staff.” Donna Mitchell, Vocational Coordinator, King Richard’s School, Paulsgrove, Portsmouth

"I was very interested to read about Growing Ambitions… I am pleased that businesses and young people are finding the website helpful." Laura Thompson, Department for Children Schools and Families.

“Growing Ambitions is an exciting new way of forging links between schools and their local communities. Accessing business speakers on line isreallysimpleand allows for the spontaneity and creativity in our approach to teaching; this will be such a useful tool when the new diplomas are up and running! We already have some parents who want to go on to the database!” Shirley Sliwinski, WRL/Careers and Enterprise Co-ordinator, Mayfield School, North End, Portsmouth

"At British Chambers of Commerce we have been highlighting the need for better education business links for a number of years. Young people need a much better understanding of the world of work when they leave education and enter the workplace. We very much support the work that Growing Ambitions is doing in helping to achieve this, as well as inspiring more young people to reach their potential."
David Frost, Director General, British Chambers of Commerce

"Skills deficiencies continue to be one of IoD members' most pressing concerns and a major barrier to the growth of their organisations. In addressing the issue, it's just as crucial to focus on what happens in schools - educating the employees of tomorrow - as on the stock of skills in the existing workforce. The IoD is therefore very excited to be partnering Growing Ambitions. This is a great way for businesses to increase their links with local schools and for directors personally to spread understanding of, and enthusiasm for, the world of work. Supporting schools' careers services can only help to motivate the next generation to raise their sights and ambitions. We are delighted to be involved." Miles Templeman, Director General, Institute of Directors

"Growing Ambitions is a project that I believe, with the right levels of support, will 'make a difference' to young lives, by introducing mentors and people from many walks of life to assist the schools in what is now a statutory requirement in the curriculum at Key Stage 4. I know Sally has the drive and experience to make this a success, and as such has my endorsement with this notable opportunity." Paul Hickman, former Enterprise Advisor for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight

"Schools and Colleges often experience difficulty in gaining access to individuals in business organisations who can offer students challenging and relevant insights about work in different sectors of employment. The links offered by Growing Ambitions have the potential to engage, inspire and support young people in making better informed decisions about future career options." Mike Johns, 14-19 IAG Advisor, Education Department, Portsmouth City Council

"Growing Ambitions is a very imaginative programme to bridge the gap between business and education. It can really help schools find speakers they need with practical experience of careers that school students are considering. The world of work is still too remote for many students, and this initiative can really help bring it much closer." David Willetts MP, Minister of State for Universities and Science

"This looks good! It’s easy to use and will be very useful to our school. One of the hardest things for schools to do, even now, is to get young people to raise their expectations of themselves. Last summer, although we had our best ever GCSE results I know that the kids were capable of more. As a nation we grapple with low expectations from all: parents, teachers and the young people themselves. This site will be a good resource for teachers everywhere who need a one-stop shop for speakers and employers who are willing to support us." Ian Wetherell, Head Teacher, Llanedeyrn High School, Llanedeyrn, Cardiff

"Growing Ambitions is an easy to use tool for getting people from the workplace in front of young people in schools. As well as helping them to clarify their career plans many will also see what a difference a university degree can make as a foundation for a rewarding career and to the total life earnings equation." Sally Pulvertaft, former Director of Enterprise, University of Portsmouth

Talking in the media about the decline in sciences ....

"We have a window of opportunity in the next five years to ensure that we stem the decline in the sciences. If we get this wrong, we risk losing a generation of scientists. We need young people to be inspired by the sciences and mathematics so that they choose these subjects in sufficient numbers to ensure that the UK's economy prospers and that we retain our place as a world leader in science and technology." Professor Martin Taylor, former Vice President, Royal Society
